Morro Bay Estuary 10/28/03
I had a very exciting birding day on 10/28/03 which started with a Cooper's Hawk dive bombing a bush in my backyard (on Shasta Street in Morro Bay) and catching a house finch.  At around 11 am I launched a kayak from Bay Shore Bluffs and passed about 100 White Pelicans packed together on the tiny bit of Grassy Island still above water with the incoming high tide.  As I approached the sandspit a cacophony of Forester, Caspian, Royal and Elegant Terns circled above me screaming and diving.  Then a parade of over 500 Double-crested Cormorants (mostly immature) casually passed in front of me, being led by one White Pelican!  After hiking over the sandspit, I saw large rafts of Surf Scoters and Ruddy ducks floating just past the surf zone.  Walking alone on the beach I saw several Semi-palmated, and Snowy Plovers and four Black-bellied Plovers, plus the usual shorebirds.  I almost stepped on a Least Sandpiper sitting in the beach rack about 20 feet away from me.  Then suddenly, like those "Magic Eye" pictures, hundreds of L. sandpipers came into focus. They were stretched out along the shore right in the dried kelp and I counted almost 2000 of them!  They seemed exhausted, like they'd just flown in from the North but maybe they'd been pushed out to the spit by the extremely high tide in Morro Bay.  I kept my distance as not to disturb them and most of them didn't even open their eyes.  Only a couple of them got up to stretch.  On the way back across the bay a Peregrine Falcon dive bombed a flock of Willets and Sanderlings sending the group into that stunning, flashing, flocking behavior. Arriving home, satiated, I started laughing to see a flock of 16 wild turkeys in my front yard.   A symbol of nature's bounty, indeed!

"Naturally, the common people don’t want war, but after all, it is the leaders of a country who determine the policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag people along whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship.

Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders.  This is easy.  All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger.  It works the same in every country."

Regular Citizen Heroically Enforces Cloisters Park's 'No Alcoholic Beverage' Rule
MORRO BAY, CA—Courageous citizen Joyce Davies went above and beyond the call of civilian duty when she enforced the Cloisters Park's "no alcoholic beverage" rule Tuesday. "Excuse me, that bottle is not allowed in this park," said Joyce to Larry Van Kleeck, who was drinking a 16 oz. Budweiser Light. "Read the signs." Joyce last intervened for the common good Monday, when she glared at a Rite Aid shopper who failed to use the cart corral.

Here are a coupe of fun animations related to the Governor's recall election arianna1 and arianna2

Letter to the Tribune editor. Redistricting is a dirty word.  Creating five Morro Bay council districts is a bad idea.  Council member and mayoral candidates were thoroughly vetted during the last election - with excellent results.  With the proposed districting, some of the best candidates would be out of play.  In our tiny town this makes no sense.  We elect our council members to represent us, and our interests exist far beyond the proposed residential district lines.  Rotating the mayoral position among council members must be a scary idea to even some potential council members, who might want to get a little more experience before undertaking that job.    Mike Baird, Morro Bay

Thought for the day: A lie repeated a thousand times becomes a truth

Under the coordination of Point Reyes Observatory, shorebird surveys were conducted in Morro Bay, CA between April 1988 and August 1994.  Using the same protocol provided by Marlin Harms, the MBVMP is organizing Spring and Fall Surveys to continue collecting data looking at the variability of shorebird numbers within and between years, with the goal of tracking long-term trends.  Shorebirds are obviously an important bioindicator of the health of the bay and the Pacific Flyway.  Observers will also be counting herons, egrets, pelicans and raptors.

We will have observers viewing from land with spotting scopes, from kayaks or canoes on the water and walking the Sandspit and Morro Strand from Morro Rock to the Rocky Point (Northpoint) just north of Yerba Buena Street.  If you are interested in participating please e-mail or call me and also let me know if you have a spotting scope or boat.  We will have a few boats available to borrow.  Please respond by April 11, 2003.  I will send out a training packet so that you won’t be required to attend a training orientation, as I know everyone is so busy.  Thanks!

Here is the description of the walk from the museum's website.  "Enjoy coastal and mountain vistas of the southern area of the park en route to Valencia Peak. Meet at the Coon Creek parking lot at the south end of Montaña de Oro State Park. Bring water, lunch and binoculars. Wear hiking boots. (Strenuous, Difficult, requires high degree of fitness) 3 mi., 4 hr." Here is a photo essay  of a similar hike to Valencia Peak during June of 2001.  Any questions, e-mail.
