Wireless "G" (which is compatible with "B") is the newest and better  technology, with both the higher speeds of "A" and the longer working distances of "B."   Wireless "A" was an intermediate "improvement" over "B" in terms of speeds, but at the sacrifice of working distances.  Most new home wireless networks will be set up with "G" technology.  Some will opt for "B" because the cost is a bit lower, and the inclusion of one "B" device on a "G" network will generally degrade the whole system to "B"-level performance anyway.  The letters "A" "B" and "G" come from the associated IEEE electronic standards 802.11a, 802.11b and 802.11g.   G = 20+Mbps 2.4GHz Band, ~150 feet indoors;  A = ~22Mbps, 5GHz Band, ~100 feet indoors;  B = 5Mbps, 2.4GHz Band, ~120 feet.  Linksys.com wireless overview - very good!
