Donations Needed to Continue Morro Bay Mutt Mitt Program

Five years ago my husband Curt and I began a program in Morro Bay to get rid of the ever increasing amount of dog feces we observed while picking up trash with a local group.  Not only is it unsightly but eventually ends up in our Estuary where it is a hazard for the critters there.  Human nature being what it is, we knew that if we made supplies to do this convenient, they were more likely to be used.  The first three Mutt Mitt dispensers  were paid for by Morro Bay Beautiful but they did not have the resources for a long term commitment to the program.  At the urging of Mary Leizear, I approached NEP and they were very enthusiastic about supporting this program and I was awarded my first grant of $5000 from them.  At the same time I approached the city and although they supported the program, there was no money in their budget to contribute at that time. After the first year, however, it was a budget item and they bought the supplies for many of the Mutt Mitt dispensers.  State Parks also funds the two dispensers on state land.

At this point my husband and I have installed 27 boxes in and around Morro Bay.

The program not only has been successful in reducing the amount of feces that ends up in our Estuary, but the visibility of the program has raised awareness for dog owners  to behave responsibly  by removing their pet’s waste.  Although many dog owners carry their own bags (grocery plastic bags, newspaper plastic bags, etc.) the fact that the Mutt Mitts are there and convenient encourages others to follow suit and pickup what their pets leave behind.

Unfortunately, the City of Morro Bay is under budgetary restraints at the present time and is uncertain how much they can contribute to this program which they strongly endorse.  We are seeking out businesses and organizations  that would be willing to contribute $500 to support one dispenser for approximately one year.  Acknowledgement that they were doing this would be placed on each of the dispensers.  At the end of the year a re-evaluation would be done to see if the city’s financial situation had changed and if they could again contribute to the program.  Individual contributions of any amount are also gratefully accepted.

Contributions may be sent directly to me, Sandra Beebe,  with “Mutt Mitts” on the front of any checks.  If a tax deduction is needed please send the contribution to The Bay Foundation of Morro Bay, 601 Embarcadero Road, Suite 11, Morro Bay CA 93442.  Be sure to note “mutt mitts” on the check.  The Bay Foundation is a 501(c)(3).  For information, please call me.

Thank you for your interest in this program.
