5th Annual Summer Solstice Celebration
Morro Bay, CA: A “Summer Solstice Celebration” returns for a fifth year at the
picnic area and campfire center in the campgrounds at Morro Bay State Park.
Inspired by summer solstice festivities practiced by cultures around the world
as well as local Native American traditions, docents, coordinated by Ray Easton
and Tyra Solomon, plan two events. On Friday, June 23, 2006 from 7 p.m. to 9
p.m., docents will lead a program of Native American activities including a
welcoming ceremony, campfire stories, a “Summer Solstice Sunset Stroll” and a
telescopic peek at the heavens. Park campers and museum affiliates are invited
to participate and are encouraged to bring their drums, rattles, clappers, and
join the merry making.
The gala event, free to the general public, takes place on Saturday, June 24,
from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Plans include a variety of displays and interactive
exhibits. Docents will discuss examples of Chumash artifacts and native plant
usage. Handicraft activities, storytelling, puppet shows will share the
spotlight with live music, live animals and nature walks. After the grand finale
of song and dance, participates will leave the festivities with a brightly
decorated tote bag filled with handmade treasures and memories of the day that
the “sun stands still”.
Come to the festivities. Invite family and friends. Spread the news to your
community. Let’s support this fun-filled tradition. Morro Bay State Park is
located on State Park Road in Morro Bay, CA. For more information please contact
