Related message from Glen Greenwald says: "The ... photos
were taken ... Friday, April 21, 2006, when I was conducting a snowy plover
nesting survey with Tom Applegate, consulting biologist, along the shores of the
Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes National Wildlife Refuge in San Luis Obispo County,
California. The bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) was 9 feet long,
and the wound width was 19.5 inches. Several biologists have suggested
that the attack was from a great white shark. After viewing these photos
this morning, Bob Pitman from NOAA Fisheries, La Jolla, said: 'It is a Tursiops
and it looks like it was a fairly healthy animal when it died. My guess is it
was a fatal attack (vs post mortem munching). Not often documented
especially on adult animals.' "
